Rental car, snow covered parking of the Sobolev institute, seven in the evening. Kom cut the engine. Silence dropped, thick.

He pulled his last Kymie capsule from his inner pocket, slid it into the travel thermos. Two sips, no more. He drank the first, handed the thermos to Irina. She drank exactly half, like the day before, like the day before that. She handed it back warm.

"Volkov never served Russia on this file, my sister. He sold your flaw to Meridian for private access. KOSCHEI cracks the keys of rival oligarchs, he shakes them down one by one. Continental scale blackmail, not a state weapon."

Irina closed her eyes. Eight years of career tipping into a coffee capsule.

"The counter code must enter the cooled room physically. One hour window, no more. If I stay with you tonight, I never go back to Moscow."

"Irina, tonight, we go put sand for their garri."

She smiled, barely. "Then let's pour the sand."

Her private phone buzzed. No name. She answered. Volkov's voice, calm, almost tender.

"Irina Petrovna. I'm waiting for you at the institute. Alone. In one hour."
